HL7 - Health Level Seven International

Supporting the inevitability of interoperability

Health Level Seven International

Founded in 1987, Health Level Seven International (HL7) is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization working to develop a framework (and related standards) for the exchange, integration, sharing and retrieval of electronic health information. HL7’s ANSI-accredited standards support clinical practice and the management, delivery, and evaluation of health services. They are the most commonly used worldwide.

"Level Seven" refers to the seventh level of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) seven-layer communications model for Open Systems Interconnection (OSI). The application level, it interfaces directly to application processes and performs common application services for them.

A key standard included in HL7 version 3, Clinical Document Architecture (CDA), provides an exchange model for clinical documents (such as discharge summaries and progress notes), bringing healthcare closer to realizing a true electronic medical record.

Nuance builds HL7-compliant solutions to ensure the interoperability organizations need to meet current information sharing needs, as well as those sure to come in an increasingly connected healthcare environment. And, through membership in The Health Story Project -- which holds an Associate Charter Agreement with HL7 -- Nuance contributes to the development and support of the HL7 CDA standards to enhance the flow of clinical information between narrative dictations and the EHR.

How Nuance makes a difference

  • Ensures the interoperability needed to meet current and future information sharing needs
  • Increases the body of clinical information available to physicians, HIM staff and researchers
  • Enables EHR meaningful use
  • Maximizes the clinical value of transcription and dictation
  • Generates the structured information EHRs require as a byproduct of care

Ensuring interoperability -- for now and for the future
Nuance solutions employ HL7, ensuring the organizational-level interoperability that fuels the industry-level interoperability necessary for true healthcare transformation.

Populating the EHR
Nuance’s solutions comply with HL7’s CDA standards, turning unstructured transcribed/dictated notes into the structured, interoperable clinical documentation needed by the EHR.

Increasing the body of actionable clinical knowledge
Using HL7’s CDA standards, Nuance solutions release valuable data locked in unstructured transcribed/dictated notes, making it available for care, research, reporting and public health.

Achieving meaningful use
Nuance’s use of HL7 enables electronic exchange of health information to improve quality of healthcare; and submission/reporting of clinical quality and other measures -- two of the three primary components of meaningful use.
